Telugu belongs to the Dravidian language family, and is very similar to Kannada. Its alphabet descends from the Brahmi script of ancient India. The earliest written examples of Telugu date back to the 6th century BC. Up to the 20th century its style was very archaic. Only during the second half of the 20th century was the modern script introduced, based on the modern spoken language. Today, the Telugu script is largely syllabic in nature
