Particular features:
Occitan, or languedoc, is a Romance language spoken in about one third of southern France, in an area delimited by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the Pyrenees to the south west, the Mediterranean to the south, the Alps to the east and an uneven line that goes from Bordeaux to the Val di Susa in Piedmont to the north. An unusual fact: in Italy, Occitan is not only spoken in Piedmont, but also in Guardia Piemontese in Calabria, due to an ancient settlement of Waldenses escaping religious persecution. Another characteristic: it is quite similar to Catalan. The two languages were once one and the same thing, but in the Middle Ages they began to take different courses for historical/political reasons. However, the similarities are remarkable to this very day, which is why they are often referred to as “sisters”. Furthermore, Occitan has always played a central geographical role compared with the other languages that derive from Latin, and still today it acts as a trait d'union between the nearby national languages (French, Italian and Spanish) and regional languages (Catalan, Provençal, etc.). Indeed, Italiano and Spanish are so similar - even more so than French - because over the ages Occitan and Catalan have acted as a "bridge" between these two languages
