Particular features:
English comes from the Germanic branch of Indo-European languages. It is a particularly unusual language as it has simplified and altered its structure to such an extent as to become more of an isolate language rather than an inflected language. From the point of view of vocabulary, it contains many more non-Germanic than Germanic terms (particularly Latin), and it is probably one of the languages that absorbs most terms from other idioms. During the 20th century, French lost its supremacy to English, which gained lingua franca status for the purposes of diplomatic and scientific communications. Today, it is the primary communication tool between ethnic groups with no cultural, scientific or political connections. English speakers are commonly split into the following groups: ENL (English as native language), ESL (English as second language) and EFL (English as foreign language).
