“Kartvelia” is the name used by the Georgians to denote their language family and the four ethic groups that speak it. It is the only South Caucasian language to boast an ancient literary tradition dating back to the 5th century AD. It is an agglutinative language (i.e. elements combine to form words in linear sequence), as is clear from the verb structure, but it is also has seven noun cases. The phonetic system does not include particularly difficult sounds, except in the use of numerous consonants in sequence. The language has a reputation for being difficult to learn, particularly due to the complexity of the verb system and the lack of gender distinction. Many words have been borrowed from the languages of nearby countries, such as Arabic, Persian and Turkish.
