Particular features:
Galician is a language of the Western Ibero-Romance branch, spoken in Galicia. Galicia is an autonomous community (roughly comparable to a federated state) with the constitutional status of "historic nationality", located in northwestern Spain. Together with Italian, Galician is one of the oldest Latin languages. It predates Castilian by about a century. There was a time when Galician was used as a language of culture outside of Galicia and Portugal, but during the 14th and 15th centuries it lost out to Castilian in terms of public, literary and religious life. An unusual fact: the Real Academia Galega and other Galician institutions celebrate each May 17 as "Día das Letras Galegas" ("Galician Literature Day"), dedicated each year to a deceased Galician-language writer chosen by the academy. As well as having a strong cultural impact, this initiative also promotes the use and knowledge of the language. Other organisations, such as AGAL (Galician Language Association) and MDL (Language Defense Movement), are also extremely important in promoting the international recognition of the language
