Particular features:
Frisian is a Germanic group of closely related languages. After Scots, Frisian is the closest related living language to English. It is one of the two official languages of the Frisian province of the Netherlands. A northern branch of the language is spoken on the islands of Sylt, Föhr and Amrum, and this is split into nine dialects, many at risk of extinction. In 2004 a law was introduced to try and salvage the language. This law, approved by the Land Schleswig-Holstein, may only be applied within the areas where northern Frisian is spoken. An eastern branch of the language is also suffering the risk of extinction, whereas the western branch has enjoyed official recognition and protection since 1956. The so-called Stadsfries or Stadsfrys ("city Frisian") - a variant of Dutch that has taken root in the major western Frisian cities since the 15th century - must not be confused with Frisian.
