Particular features:
Tagalog (Philippine) belongs to the family of Austronesian languages. The languages that most contributed to its formation are Spanish, Malay, English, Sanskrit (through Malay), Arabic and the other languages of the Northern Philippines (e.g. Kapampangan spoken in Luzon). Very little is known about its history, and the oldest documents written in the language date back to the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century. Tagalog was chosen by the National Language Institute - a committee comprising 7 members representing the various regions of the Philippines - as the official language of the Philippines. The president Manuel L. Quezon proclaimed Tagalog the national language (wikang pambansâ) in 1937, although this decision was not formalised until after the country gained its independence from the United States in 1946. Since 1940, Tagalog has been the only language - among 160 Philippine dialects - to be officially taught in schools. The language name was changed to Philippine in 1987.
