Particular features:
Farsi belongs to the Indo-Iranian (Aryan) branch of the Indo-European family of languages. Persian, also known as Farsi (local term) or Parsi (ancient local name, still used today), with its Tajik dialects (from Central Asia) and Dari (Afghan), is the official language of Iran, Tajikistan and Afghanistan. Its structure is characterised by the following sequence: subject-object-verb. Usually, the idioms spoken by Iranians, Tajiks and Afghans are mutually comprehensible. Modern Persian uses a modified version of the Arabic alphabet, which took hold around a century and a half after Persia's conversion to Islam. Before the Arab invasion, Persian was written using two different alphabets: a modified version of Aramaic and an alphabet born in Iran called dîndapirak ("religious script"). Although Persian and Arabic use the same alphabet, to all intents and purposes they are two distinct and extremely different languages, given that they belong to two different families and their grammar and phonetics are extremely different.
