Particular features: Faroese is a West Nordic or West Scandinavian language. It is one of three insular Scandinavian languages descended from the Old Norse language spoken in Scandinavia in the Viking Age, the others being Icelandic and the extinct Norn, which is thought to have been mutually comprehensible with Faroese. Faeroese did not change significantly between the 9th and the 15th centuries, thus remaining mutually comprehensible with the other languages used in the area of the ancient Vikings. Under the name of Danish, Faroese was forbidden in schools, churches and official documents, but the islanders continued to use it in their everyday lives and in their folkloristic traditions. The language thus survived for 300, exclusively through a lively oral tradition. In 1937, Faroese replaced Danish as the official school language, 1938 as church language, and 1948 as national language. However, Faroese didn't become the common language in the media and advertising until the 1980s, when Danish became regarded as a foreign language
