Danish belongs to the North Germanic languages (also called Scandinavian languages), a sub-group of the Germanic branch of the Indo-European languages. As well as being the official language of Denmark, Danish also holds official status in the former Danish colonies of Greenland and the Faroe Islands. Furthermore, in Iceland, which was a part of Denmark until 1944, Danish is still the second foreign language taught in schools On the other hand, it has disappeared from the US Virgin Islands, which were also part of Denmark until 1916. Like other Scandinavian languages, Danish is one of the few Indo-European languages that does not conjugate verbs according to person and number. Nouns can be neuter or common. A distinctive feature of all Scandinavian languages is the use of the enclitic article (the definite article is added as a suffix to the noun).
