Croatian is a language of the western group of South Slavic languages, and uses the Latin alphabet. Croatian, Serbian and Bosnian are very similar, although they are by no means the same. What sets them apart are a number of phonetic, lexical and grammatical differences, a different language use and different literary traditions that have characterised and distinguished them over the years. Before the collapse of Yugoslavia, these three languages were grouped under a single heading, “Serbo-Croatian” ("srpskohrvatski"), a name that had long had negative connotations in Croatia and was rarely used.
