Particular features:
Czech is one of the West Slavic languages, along with Slovak, Polish and Serbian. It uses an amended version of the Latin alphabet, to better reflect specific phonemes. Czech, like Latin other Slavic languages, does not use the article but uses declensions: nouns agree depending on the case (pád), number (číslo) and gender (rod). Their combination grants each word the correct logical role within a phrase. Czech pronunciation is difficult: the accent is weak and is placed on the first syllable. When a word is preceded by a preposition, the accent may often move to this preposition. Accent and length must be distinguished! Syllables can be long or short. The length is determined by a special symbol: á, é, í, ó, ú. In the case of "ú", there are two ways of signaling the length: "ú" and "ů" (the pronunciation is the same), with "ú" generally written at the start of a word and "ů" in the middle or at the end. This difference arose as a result of the historical development of the Czech script
