Particular features:
Catalan is known as Valencian in Valencia and Mallorquin in the Balearic Islands. The dialects spoken in Barcelona, Valencia and Majorca are very similar. In the past it was the language of the Aragon court and of the first settlers in Sardinia, although here after the 1600s it slowly gave way to Castilian. During the early 1800s no shortage of attempts were made to salvage and promote the use of Catalan, by now considered no more than a dialect. In the early 1900 the script was standardised, so as to merge all the different versions into a single orthography. This gave much impulse to literary, theatrical and journalistic production, and therefore to the acknowledgement of Catalan as an official language. During Franco's regime, the use of Catalan was once more forbidden, thus promoting the view of Catalan as a dialect (i.e. a variant) of Spanish (Castilian). In 1979 it was recognised as the language of the Catalan region (Generalitat de Catalunya), promoting its official use and its teaching in schools. Catalan is also the official language of the Comunidad Valenciana, of the Balearic Islands and of Aragon. Furthermore, Catalan is the only official language of the State of Andorra. In 2005 is was also recognised as a co-official language of the European Union. An unusual fact: unlike Spanish, Catalan has no Arabic words, whereas it has many terms derived from French and Occitan. Ancient Catalan, like certain modern variants such as the Balearic and Cadaquès dialect and like Sardinian, use the articles es/so/sa, derived from the Latin "ipsu(m)/ipsa(m)". Ironically, however, the Alghero Catalan currently spoken in Sardinia uses forms similar to the standard Catalan (lo/la). Furthermore, certain Catalan words may also be found in the Venetian dialect
