Particular features:
Like many regional French languages, Breton lost out to French, particularly at the end of the 19th century. After the second world war it enjoyed a strong revival, particularly towards the 1970s. Brittany is historically characterised by two language areas. Lower Brittany (Basse-Bretagne or Breizh Izel) is where the original Breton language is spoken (related to Welsh and Cornish). Upper Brittany (Haute-Bretagne or Breizh Uhel) is where neo-Latin (Gallic) dialects are spoken. Two interesting facts: Asterix the Gaul was translated into Breton in 2004; and Breton was used during the last world war as a "code" language for radiophone communications. In fact, there were very few people on the German side who could speak this language
