The Birmanian alphabet finds its roots in the Brahma script, from which Indian and other South Eastern Asian alphabets also originated (e.g. Thai). The alphabets has 45 letters, 34 consonants and 21 vowels (7 main vowels with three different tones). Different vowel forms exist for Sanskrit or Pali words, and others again for vowels that may give rise to ambiguity when following certain consonants. An unusual fact: all the letters of the alphabet are rounded in shape as the script was created to be written on palm leaves and therefore it was important to avoid letters with long horizontal or vertical lines that would have cut the leaf. As in many other alphabets in this part of the world, each consonant has an intrinsic vowel - almost always a short a - and therefore it is not necessary to write a vowel when writing this sound in a word.
