Particular features:
Belarusian belongs to the Slav oriental subgroup, and is closely related to Russian and Ukrainian, notwithstanding its significant influences from Polish. The word "Byelorussian" is an adjective derived from the transliteration of the Russian name of the country (Byelorussia, from bjela meaning white). Indeed, the language is sometimes referred to as white Russian and the country as White Russia. The language is mainly written in a modified version of the Cyrillic alphabet, but the original Łacinka (or Latin) alphabet is also used and in the past an Arabic version was also adopted. Today the Arabic script is no longer in use. The main alphabet is Łacinka, although the official alphabet remains Cyrillic.
