Particular features:
Azeri is the language used in the region of Azerbaijian. The Arabic alphabet was introduced in the 7th century and preserved in use until 1920. During this space of time, three versions of the Arabic script were used: the 28-letter alphabet, the Persian-Arabic 32-letter alphabet and finally the Turkish-Arabic 33-letter alphabet. As none of these scripts was particularly suitable, in the 9th and 20th century numerous proposals for change were put forward. In 1929 the Latin alphabet, known as Yanalif (new alphabet) was adopted in the north Soviet Azerbaijan. This was mainly part of an attempt by the Soviet authorities to reduce the influence of Islam in the areas, where the Arabic script was in use until 1929. In 1939 Stalin imposed the Cyrillic alphabet, with the aim of discouraging alliances that might threaten the Soviet Union.
