Particular features:
Assamese is an English term, coined to define this language on the basis of the English word Assam, but the locals refer to themselves as Ôxôm and to the language as Ôxômiya. The Assamese alphabet is written using Bengali fonts. The first book to be published in Assamese was a translation of the Bible, published in 1813 in Calcutta.
