Amharic is the official language spoken in the heart of Ethiopia (Tigrinya, used in the North, and Oromigna, widespread in the South, are only semi-official). The area brings together an incredible number of populations and languages (over eighty). Amharic, like Tigrinya, uses the Ge'ez alphabet, which includes as many as 231 letters. The language is Semitic in origin, and its syllabic signs are split into seven groups depending on the vocal tone. Amharic uses triconsonantal roots in its verb morphology, from which nouns, adjectives and all other sentence elements are derived.
