Particular features:
Not withstanding Albanian's Indo-European origins, as can often be witnessed in its vocabulary, it is strangely unlike other Indo-European language groups. In addition to Albania, It is also spoken by Arbëreshë minorities in certain areas of Greece and Italy, and in the past was used in Istria and Syrmia. Today, a number of Albanian and Arbëreshe communities living in the U.S.A., Canada, Argentina, Egypt and Brazil still preserve the original language and traditions. The official language, which in the past used Greek and sometime Turkish-Arabic scripts, adopted the Latin alphabet in 1909. Given the country's geographical position and its continuous contacts with neighbouring populations, over the ages Albanian has borrowed many Latin, Greek, Turkish and Slav terms. |
