Particular features:
Together with Swahili, Afrikaans is "PROBABLY" the most widespread language of the African continent. Although much of the Afrikaans vocabulary derives from Dutch, it also contains words borrowed from Bantu, Khoisan, Portuguese and Malay. In the early 1800s, the language started prevailing over Malay, initially conserving the Arabic script. It wasn't until 1850 that Afrikaans, with a Latin script, first appeared on newspapers and in political/religious documents. In the early 20th century academic interest in Africaans grew high, and in 1925 it was promoted from a mere slang version of Dutch to the official language of South Africa.
