Computer assisted translation (CAT) and machine translations (MT) are two IT applications at the service of the translator, but their differences are considerable and are sometimes not appreciated or are perhaps even misunderstood.
The former is based on the creation and management of translation memories and glossaries. It increases productivity and guarantees terminology uniformity as it makes use of previous translations.
The aim of the second system is to replace the physical translator with a machine. In just a few minutes, this technology provides translations which, however, are of a poor quality and sometimes even incomprehensible.
The use of said solution is only justified when – having adapted the system and created specific glossaries – it is used to translate texts exclusively for personal use.
