Terminology and glossaries
[The question "Will terminology be consistent and in line with the company jargon?" is an understandable and constant worry when having a document translated]
This issue has become a fundamental concern in Soget's translation work.
In addition to strengthening a company's image and brand, correct terminology is extremely important when producing technical documentation. Glossaries allow authors, designers, translators and revisers to use consistent terminology.
Our Project Managers, aided by translators and terminology experts, identify critical terms both through the traditional approach of analysing reference documents and using sector dictionaries and vocabularies, and through the use of advanced automated systems (data mining) and IT tools capable of extrapolating critical terms within the documentation on the basis of statistical and morphosyntactic criteria.
Example of terminology projects:
extracting terms from texts in a single language,
extracting terms from parallel texts in two languages,
translation of existing terminology contained in a termbase,
analysis and improvement of the termbase and of documents,
creation of a bilingual glossary.
The glossaries thus obtained may be amended and approved by the customer or validated by us.
The definitive acceptance of each term.
As with translation memories, approved glossaries form part of the terminology database available to all the translators required for a single project, thus guaranteeing consistency and uniformity. We use computer aided translation systems (see CAT) that allow the translator to access a validated term automatically and the reviser to ensure the correct terminology has been used.
TBX AND OTHER FORMATS
In the event of the glossary or dictionary being the actual product commissioned, this may be delivered in TBX format (based on Xml), or in the most common proprietary formats for databases, such as Multiterm, CrossTerm, MS Access and MS Excel or, or in a specifically requested template.
CONVERSION AND MIGRATION OF GLOSSARIES AND DICTIONARIES
We can also convert termbases from one format to another (e.g. from Multiterm to CrossTerm).
