Adobe InDesign CS4 speeds up production flows and offers a creative integrated operating system for the design of professional layouts complete with graphic elements and sophisticated typographical fonts.
The latest version, CS4, enables the creation and distribution of documents in Flash formats (our online brochure was creates using this function).
One of the most important innovations of this version is given by the possibility of creating high-impact layouts to be published offline and online.
It is now possible to publish an InDesign document directly in SWF, or to export it in XFL, to be processed in Flash CS4 Professional, thus integrating the powerful DTP functions of Indesign with the authoring functions of Flash. Finally, the PDF files produced in Indesign can incorporate Flash videos, rendering the contents dynamic and interactive.
The product is either sold on its own, or as part of the Adobe® Creative Suite® 4 Design (Standard and Premium) and of the Adobe Creative Suite 4 Master Collection. These versions include the main Adobe printing and web publishing applications, and mobile devices such as: Photoshop® CS4, Illustrator® CS4, Flash® CS4, Dreamweaver® CS4 and Adobe Acrobat 9 Professional.
With CS4, Adobe has improved its management of Asian vertical scripts (Chinese, Korean and Japanese). This version includes new multilingual Opentype fonts.
What it offers:
- Thorough text and graphic controls and extended functions similar to those of QuarkXpress, with which it competes.
- It integrates with other Adobe applications, with which it shares a common interface, better than any other professional design tool.
- It allows specific styles to be automatically applied to Microsoft® Word files during importation, mapping the styles of Word.
- It facilitates the creation of tables. One of the programme's strengths is the possibility of opening QuarkXPress and PageMaker files.
- It also enables the creation of multilevel PDFs.
Users:
photocomposers, specialised DTP operators, creative artists and pre-printing experts.
Production:
high level layout designs with numerous graphic elements, newspapers, brochures, packaging, catalogues, adverts and books.
Exportation and languages
As well as exporting int the proprietary format, CS4 also exports in InDesign Interchange (.inx), a version compatible with previous formats,and into Adobe PDF, XFL, XML, SVG, HTML, EPS and printing files.
Exportation enables the creation of a set of data for subsequent importation and elaboration in Dreamweaver®.
The International version enables direct management of the leading western, Cyrillic, Baltic and central European languages, as well as Greek and Eastern languages. Unfortunately, right-to-left scripts are not supported (Arabic, Farsi, Hebrew, etc.). For these languages the use of the localised Adobe InDesign ME (Middle East) version is required.
