Analysis of Adobe FrameMaker 9

a

[Soget's analysis on the latest release of FrameMaker®: main characteristics and specific language management functions]

Adobe® FrameMaker® 9 is a powerful authoring and publishing application aimed at drafters and users of technical documentation. It includes an authoring system based on WYSIWYG-type models, and manages contents structured in XML and SGML using DITA (1.1 and 1.2) or DocBook technology, as well as variations to a single source of the same document by means of advanced conditional output. Furthermore, it supports Unicode, 3D and complex contents for the creation of attractive multilingual documentation.

Users:
those responsible for documentation and manuals, technical editors and DTP operators handling large volumes of information through multimedia channels: Internet, press, CD-ROM and PDA.

Production:
technical manuals and highly organised, indexed and structured corporate documents; multiplatform documentation; exportations in a vast range of formats, including HTML, XML, SGML and Adobe PDF.

What it offers:
thorough text controls (similar to those offered by advanced word processors) and a hierarchical document organisation (SGML and XML) have turned this programme into the direct competitor of Interleaf QuickSilver.
The programe supports long documents, including as it does management functions capable of managing entire publications (books), as well as containing sophisticated templates and numerous formatting options. It provides in-built support for high resolution printing and PDF creation.
FrameMaker 8 imports content from many other formats, including Microsoft Word and Excel (Office 2007), QuarkXPress and Adobe PageMaker® software. It imports comments from PDFs.
It supports TrueType, OpenType, and Type 1 fonts.

Language management:
Exports in: Adobe PDF, HTML, XML, SGML, MIF and RTF.
FrameMaker 9 includes Unicode support to edit and create content in multiple languages (including simplified and traditional Chinese, Korean and Japanese). It also features spell checkers and hyphenation support for the following languages: Bulgarian, Catalan, Czech, Croatian, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish.
However, Arabic, Hebrew and other right-to-left scripts are not supported by FrameMaker.

Note:
FrameMaker 7.2 and earlier versions do not support Unicode text.
If a document in FrameMaker 8 or FrameMaker 9 includes Unicode text in languages that are not supported by previous versions, then characters will be lost when the file is saved in the 7.x version. When the file is re-opened in the original version (FrameMaker 8 or 9), the character information will be missing.
