Asian and Far East languages tattoos

Oriental languages have very different scripts, therefore it is important to request a specific language.

The numbers used in many oriental languages - e.g. when tattooing dates of birth or other anniversaries - are different to those used in the West. Therefore, ensure you request their translation.

As regards tattoos of first names, please consult our definitions for the difference between a translation and a transliteration.

As regards Chinese tattoos, it is important to specify whether you require traditional Chinese, used in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, or simplified Chinese (a.k.a. modern Chinese), used throughout the People's Republic of China and in Singapore. Traditional Chinese (Zhu Yin) includes over 13,000 characters, while simplified Chinese "only" includes 7,000.

As regards Japanese tattoos texts can be written in three different characters: kanji, hiragana and katakana.

• Kanji (ideograms): used for nouns, verb roots and adjectives. Furthermore, most Japanese names are written in kanji. Kanji originated in China.
• Hiragana (Japanese syllabic alphabet): used for nouns, verbs, grammatical elements (endings, suffixes, particles, auxiliaries), it is often combined with kanji to form verbs and adjectives. Each hiragana corresponds to a syllable, e.g. あ. Normally, 46 characters are used.
• Katakana (Japanese syllabic alphabet): used for transliterations.

Finally, Rōmaji is also used. This is a “Romanisation” system used to write Japanese characters (mainly kanji) in other languages, thus facilitating legibility.

As regards Korean tattoos, the Hangul alphabet is used. This is the official alphabet of South and North Korea.

As regards Thai tattoos and other language tattoos, we always use the official local alphabets.
